Ancient Greece Messana-Zankle (Sicily) Drachm 500 BC Counterfeit's Dies of 19th Century
SNG ANS 298; SNG Ashmolean 1818; SNG Lockett 814; Steel and bronze for the dies; Silver for the type coin; by Dardani (see document attached); Obv: DANKLE , dolphin leaping to left, within sickle-shaped harbour of Messana. Rev: Scallop-shell, within a shallow incuse square containing a pattern of raised and sunken triangles and squares; Translation of the document: I declare that today I have received the sum of lit. from Mr Gino Manfredini, a monthly magazine published in Brescia. 600,000 as a complete settlement of a lot of no. 72 coins attributed to the well-known Roman coiner Dardani (dead for years) and related to classical coins. Said molds are given by me for the sole purpose of study and publication, the purpose for which they were purchased by me at his time, or for other lawful uses. I specify that these are the same coins that were seized from me on 1.5.70 by the CC Investigative Unit. of Bologna, to be then returned to me on 19.2.1971 following sentence no. 6448/70/GI. of the Investigating Judge Dr. L. Sacchetti of the Court of Bologna; and that therefore - according to the law - they can no longer be seized
