You may want to consider the following approach for your quest: 1. Become familiar with the great collectors and what happened to their collections:
2. For those collections donated to museums eg Czapski, some of the museums are starting to list their collections
3. Some of the collectors published catalogs of their collection. Eg Mikhailovich, Schubert, Reichel, Willy Fuchs etc.
Some are expensive even if you could find them. Reichel's 10 vol set with Russland #1 is $5000-8000. Fuchs was issued in very small numbers. I have pdfs of Mikhailovich 12 volumes, Rare Coins in My Collection, and Want List as well as Schubert and Vol 1 of Reichel etc but until there's indication of support, I don't plan to upload them
4. For those collections auctioned off, see if a pdf exists for the auction
Many of the auctions of the last 10 years have pdfs of the auction eg Prokop, Hesselgesser, etc. If there is no pdf, you will have to either buy the catalog or wait for a volunteer to scan a pdf for upload to the database, assuming permission is obtained. Eg Baranova, Synadino, Soderman, Landry, Hermes, Brekke etc. I have pdfs for Klingert, Tolstoi, Bespalof etc but until there's support for the project, I don't plan to upload them.
5 . There are a number of sellers of older catalogs: George Kolbe Steve Moulding A number of sellers of older catalogs on ebay in the category coins/literature
It's a pretty expensive and clumsy way as opposed to having pdfs in the database. Even reprints eg Klingert are expensive I might point out that using demonstration pdfs at ,which are meant to show what can be done, is a pretty inefficient and awkward way to do it. Everything is meant to be done from within the database. I would encourage you to download and try it out first, rather than working from pdfs.

The big picture approach to the database project is: 1. Do the functions have high value? 2. Is the Database Control Panel/user interface friendly? If the functions are of no value, it doesn't make any difference whether the user interface is friendly or not. If the functions have high value, the user interface is secondary and the question is whether the interface can be made friendly enough relative to the value.
The 7 key questions to be answered..... is there any value in having on the desktop for immediate update:
1. A Who's Who biography of all the names associated with Russian numismatics on the desktop and read for example about the famous collectors and what happened to their collections 2. A Bitkin catalog and price guide on the desktop but with sort, filter, dynamic update, and reporting capabilities and expanded to literature and medals? 3. Having that catalog but with more and sharper images, encyclopedia like notes, descriptions, insights etc such as in the Breeke book on bead tokens or as you see in Kolbe or Markov auctions 4. Links to auction pdfs and auction house archives, pdfs of Klingert, Mikhailovich, Russian Numismatic Society articles, forum posts etc all central in one place on the desktop 5. An ability to do side by side analysis of forgeries? 6. Being able to view auction prices like m-dv.ru for coins, but also for literature and medals, to aid in price discovery and determining values 7. The ability to inventory a personal collection with a click of the mouse, and printing reports to read in the bathtub or give to your wife in case something happens to you?
All under the principle of continuity of action, which is being able to do something at the time you want to do it....change a price, insert an image, enter a link, etc. If the answer is yes to some or all of these, then the user interface can be dealt with.
I have been in production mode with the database in one form or another for 25 years with no problem, but then I'm not arm's length objective. I can say the Russian alphabet isn't particularly end user friendly, but I'm slowly learning it.

It's important to know that Access 2007 [U][B]IS[/B][/U] SQL. The big advantage is that Access has a graphical user interface which makes it much easier to design tables, queries, forms, and reports than to write them in native SQL/php code. The SQL code that Access creates are a mile long, especially if the query or form is complex. But even so, this database still requires hundreds of pages of Visual Basic Code in addition to get things to work. I can't imagine doing it in native mode. As it is, even with Access, I've been plunking away at it for 30 years.
Once you have tables and queries designed, which is by far the hardest part, forms/datasheets and reports to display data are relatively easy to create. The accdr files you see are packaged so as to allow users not having Access 2007 installed to run the database. This thanks to Microsoft making the run time code available for free. But accdr files when they are packaged for distribution to users are stripped of all design modules, code etc. Otherwise, users could go in an change the way the database runs. To be able to play around with the tables, queries or form specs, you would have to buy a full version of Access 2007, and work with accdb files, which are what I'm working with as I make changes like the ones you suggested.
But for testing the database and working with the functions, you shouldn't have to do that. Only make notes on the 5 page instructions as you go through exercising all the functions as to what isn't working, what isn't clear, what could be improved, etc.
I visited your web site. Some of the utilities are very userful, although I consider them tactical supportive rather than strategic. What you might want to think of as strategic is if you want to design and code a native SQL Bitkin catalog with everything that's in his catalog, but with literature and medals. And then use that catalog and literature for doing auction prices, forgery analysis and inventorying of a collection. I estimate 20-30 man years. See the query for the Master Record at and the SQL generated The tester before you was critical of desktop Access, feeling it should all be native on the server. There are three problems:
1. Access DOES allow the data tables to be on a SQL server for remote internet update, with the code tables, queries, forms, reports, visual basic code and images remaining on the desktop. The SQL server can handle 100's of users dynamically adding/changing data, while keeping the other stuff on the desktop keeps delay times down because a lot of the work is being done by the desktop cpu without going round trip to the server for everything. So it's a hybrid approach 2. To be able to do a native SQL design, you have to have user input as to data requirements, functions, forms layouts etc. The only stake in the ground as to what these are that I'm aware of is the test database. If there's little interest in it, there certainly wouldn't be any interest if it were all on the cloud 3. There isn't a big enough market for justify a development effort. If I can't give it away, it's obvious nobody is going to pay for it if it were all on the cloud.
What forum collectors should ask is this: Is there a need for the following functions (which are at the volunteer site)
1. Bitkin Brekke Severin Uzdenikov interactive Access catalog and price guide but with numerous sort and filter capabilities and dynamic update 2. Numismatic encyclopedia due to more data able to be stored for each name, lit, coin, or medal 3. Traffic cop providing directions to pdf and internet links. JRNS articles, Wikepedia, forum posts, pdfs of auctions and reference works etc 4. Structured system for side by side comparison and danger analysis of forgeries 5. Auction tracking system similar to m-dv.ru and Bitkin for establishing literature, coin, and medal values 6. Personal collection inventory tool by clicking on a catalog entry, condition and auction, keying in purchase price and auction notes and then printing reports
The only database I'm aware of with these capabilities and exclusively designed for Imperial Russian numismatics is the volunteer test database. If the answer is yes, it should be worth the 6 hours or so to download and evaluate the function and develop a consensus. If anyone should be interested in this, it should be Bitkin and Uzdenikov (his successor), as least for the coin catalog as they don't have literature which is really necessary, not only for auctions but for reference and for collecting literature in it's own right. Bitkin really isn't doing #2,3,4 or 6 and only a minimal effort at 5, but with few entries that are now 10 years old. I've emailed Bitkin several times, but never heard back

There's a task at the rnsdb forum to understand what different screen sizes, operating systems, and resolution settings do to the appearance when the database is launched, but my 3 desktops seem to run okay, so I'm assuming Windows 7/8 is doing the right thing. I'm iOs developer and I work with db (mostly sqlite) from time to time, so I understood what it is, but I think its wrong way show base internal identifiers to user [COLOR=#0000FF]You might be right. This isn't a banking transaction system or Yahoo or Amazon order entry, but a pretty small collecting population, so being closer and personal to the code and system innards may not be a problem. It seems, that you use one supertable ( I counted 61 fields!!!) instead a system of related tables and a lot of its field is unnecacery for list of coins, user could see it only if he selects some coin and looks at it record, i.e. list of coins is something like index in the end of books or books contents. I think, database struct need redesign, but I m not sure because I dont see current struct. May be i try to look at it and try to do my version of your app if I find some time to it for show what I mean. Or I can send you my own struct when I finish redesign it. You are right about tables. But many of the 61 fields you count are coming in from queries linked to the 21 code tables, such as abbreviation and description of rarity etc. There is one table for Names (21 fields), one table for Master Records (33 fields), one table for Prices (21 fields) and 21 tables for codes eg denomination, metal, etc. (6 or so fields each). When I went to input Brekke and Severin data, I found it took 25 fields to describe the coin, and I added additional fields like importance, memo fields, whether an image exists, etc) You can see the specs for the 33 fields at I can read sql scripts as Access generates SQL statements. I have also tested the migration of the 3 tables (not the code tables) to the mysql server at rnsdb.x10.mx and was able to update the data over the internet. I'm not sure what splitting the Master Records table into several tables would accomplish. The Access queries are complicated enough trying to connect the 24 tables, as Access generates SQL statements several paragraphs long.[/COLOR]

1. My pdf printer is dopdf 7, but it won't create a pdf while in Remote Desktop or Terminal Services. I do all my work in Remote Desktop from 3 laptops and 2 desktops which connect to the 3d main desktop. Access 2007 in Remote Desktop creates the pdfs okay, I assume because it's all Microsoft software
2. There's a bunch of Access 2007 and Access 2003 compatability discussions on the internet, even if the 2007 accdbs are converted to 2003 mdbs. Visual basic commands, features, etc. The net seems to be a number of user interface incompatabilities. One big data one is the inability to link to tables in another database. The coins database links to the literature database tables in order to get the auctions needed to enter auction prices
3. The purpose of the database evolved. Back in 1985 when it was in Basic on the pc, I wanted to get Brekke and Severin into computer format, so I OCR scanned their books creating the 7500 entries. I added literature and medals manually from my own collection and auctions, as there was no single good reference. It was converted to DBase 3 and then Access when it first came out. So the first objective was to have a computerized Bitkin so to speak, but with more images and more narrative snippets from Brekke, JRNS articles, forums, auctions, etc. Whenever I saw something interesting eg Czapski countermarks, I either entered some narrative, or more recently put in a link to get to it.
4. Once a computerized catalog existed, it became the basis for creating an inventory of the collection by simply clicking on the literature, coin or medal item in the catalog and then clicking on condition and flaws, and typing in price and any notes. With several thousand literature, coins, and medals, I could never have done it manually or with any of the collection software I've seen for sale. Adding fields for links and pdfs only came about with the major update in 2012. The database, of course, is specific to only Imperial Russian numismatics
5. So the database is a computerized Bitkin Brekke Severin Uz catalog, an encylopedia, a collection inventory tool, a traffic cop giving directions to pdfs and links, an auction tracking and price discovery system similar to m-dv.ru, and a forgery analysis tool, since forgeries can be entered just like Bitkin coins and the original compared side by side with the forgery.

Unfortunately, the database is sprinkled throughout with code that is not compatible with Access 2003. Also, the key reason I upgraded was that Access 2007 has the awesome ability to create pdfs. I used to think it could only do it from designed reports and was demonstrating my datasheets and form views as screen capture images, but I discovered 2007 makes an exact pdf of what you see on the screen. Awesome.
I converted 3 desktops from 2003 to 2007 by buying an upgrade on ebay. The price ran from $30 to $50 and all the keys worked. Microsoft seems to be very lenient about the keys. Given all the additional function, better ribbon etc in 2007 and the low cost of upgrading, I'd strongly recommend going with the upgrade
In order to test the database on my 3 laptops, I installed the Microsoft Access 2007 runtime module, and all 3 laptops work without having Access installed. I'm curious what you mean by runtime not being the best way, because runtime ignores any installation of Access 2003 or earlier versions.
As an aside, what is your opinion of Google translate and is it of any use to include both English and the Google translate in the post? When I use Goodgle to reverse translate their translation back into English, it comes out a little strange, but I'm generally able to get the gist of it.
Although I've pretty much concluded there's not much support for the database, I often wondered would it would take to design it in Russian. For example, does Microsoft Word, or Snag it, or PDF splitters or any of the software packages I use here in the US go to the effort to offer them in Russian?

Major but can be dealt with in several ways 3.1 Any of the columns in the datasheet can be sel ected and moved right off screen so that you have to scroll right to see them. Medium: Letter paper Landscape which allows 170 or so characters, and Maxiumum: Legal Paper Landscape which allows 225 or so characters. Similarly, the Master Record and Prices buttons could be divided into Minimal Moderate Maximum to display minimal to the most detailed. I found I was using maximum in all my research. What constitutes minimum and what's moderate would have to be determined by users. Maximum is already defined by me, but it's easier to cut something down than to figure out what has to be added. It's a good idea, though 4. When you filter multiple czars like Peter I and Anna or denominations, it will display the records for all, but the filter box only shows the Access code of the last one clicked. It's impractical to show a running list of all the czars or all the denominations picked. Normally however you only pick one or else you know you've picked 2 or 3, even though you may not see them all. 5. Anna Ivanova Polish Occupation Osaka Moscow Mint etc: Minor fixed. Anna Ivanova was Brekke usage. Osaka is a mint according to Severin. All these are minor because they are easily fixed and there are going to be some errors throughout the database arising from the way data got into the database. But they aren't important in evaluating the software. What you do point out that's major is whether the database is too unfriendly and complicated. The other tester before you concluded the same thing, which resulted in a number of simplifications and changes. I can only say the functions I wanted as a collector required a certain level of complexity. Windows XP or 8 isn't friendly or easy to learn but that's what the Windows functions required. It's like learning a new language. It's not easy. Your suggestions will help simplify this somewhat. Your closing comment about the unusability in it's current state is key, because the current state is constantly changing thanks to suggestions and new ideas. What it looks like today is nothing like what it looked like back in 1992 or in 2012. What it looks like in 3 more months will resemble but be different fr om what it is today. If I get two or three more feedbacks, I'll package a new runtime se t of files and upload. The test database is over a year old so it's missing a lot of the new auctions, references and coins I've added since, the updated forgery forms etc. It takes 5-6 hours to package new run time files which could then serve for another iteration of testing.

I have figured out a way for links in a pdf to be clickable when the pdf is a full detail form view as opposed to a report listing. The pdf link at the top for the Peter I corpus detailed form view, for example, should now be clickable
This will be incorporated into all future pdfs. PDFs are being created as a convenience to demonstrate what is in the database, but really everything should take place from within the Database Control Panel

Wow!! Good find. The finest set I've seen at auction. With only the Willy Fuchs set close but that lacked the 50 plates of Vol III. I could not find any reference to the collector who's library it came from but the library is impressive. I also couldn't see in the listing any of the copy numbers for each of the volumes usually listed in the auctions. If they were all low, you'd almost suspect this set came down from a close circle of Mikhailovich.
It's a wealth of information. I've added both the auction house, their 3 auctions so far, and this lot into the database. When the auction ends, I'll add the price. I'd be surprised if it doesn't go well beyond the estimate

His library was auctioned by Kolbe Fanning in 2011 but contained only the French 1916 edition but did have many other rariites eg Chadoir, Iverson, Oreshnikov, Klingert, Tolstoi, Hermitage duplicates. PROPOSAL FOR A STRUCTURED DATABASE METHODOLOGY FOR FORGERY ANALYSIS
Forgeries of Russian coins (and medals) go back to the days of Illyn and Schubert and with the current high prices and improving technology, are an ever growing problem. An estimate of the total number would be in excess of 700 of the universe of 7800 coins. The database currently has 91 forgeries identified fr om JRNS articles and elsewh ere and has a forgery module for displaying the analysis side by side. 4 of these have been chosen for analysis using the methodology below. These are:
1. 1912 Napoleon Commemorative Bitkin 343 2. 1741 Ivan СИБ ruble Bitkin 26 3. 1726 1 kopek plate Bitkin 357 4. 1787EM 5 kopek Swedish Bitkin 638
The present approach is a time consuming hit or miss via searching the internet, going through multiple posts across pages and years or other fragmented sources, and with no consistency as to what should be in an analysis. The technology is outrunning the systems for coping with the problem. Sending coins out requires owning them, is expensive and doesn't draw on the expertise that resides in the collector population who often know more than the authenticators.
The structured database methodolody involves using the Bitkin Brekke Severin Uzdenikov reference number eg b343 and related images and information currently in the database and creating one or more additional entries eg b343f1, b342f2 etc for each forgery with the appropriate analysis. A module in the database can then display with a few mouse clicks the analysis for any specific coin that is requested. The following methodology and principles apply: 1. Side by side comparison of original with the forgery(s) is a requirement 2. Forgeries must be identified by Bitkin Brekke Severin Uzdenikov # or else considered fantasy 3. Sharp color images of original and forgery obverse, reverse and edge are required and should be zoomable to full screen 4. Display of rarity + value of original should be shown. If R2-R5 or $5,000 extra caution is called for 5. Forgery technology should be identified eg casting, engraving, etc 6. The multiple features which condemn it should be clearly spelled out 7. A danger level code 1-10 should be assigned to alert and help filter the more obvious from the near identical 8. Once done and agreed to, a requirement is for the analysis of a specific coin to be displayed from the database in seconds with a few mouse clicks

Рон Keywords are a valid requirement and there is a field in the database to hold key words and a find button to do the search. Unfortunately, I do not have enough years left to be able to do it but there is a task in the forum for volunteers to do this. My thinking is as follows:
1. The RNS site index only went through #71 and as I was updating it through #91, I found numerous errors and omissions
2. The site never did have an article index for the 26 issues of the Newsletter of the Russian Numismatic Society
3. The RNS site has been down for a year, but was recently restarted, but without the article index. The intent is apparently to publish something again, but with mailing costs so high, internet distribution is the only alternative. But most people don't want to pay, the market is small, and as Bitkin/Conros/Krause catalogs demonstrate, once a purchased pdf is sent out, it is freely available for anyone who wants to download an illegal pirated bootleg copy. Although, this case, the copyrights are owned by the authors who I'm sure would have no problem with free pdfs since they wrote them not for profit. I know Ran Zander, who wrote many of them, would not. However, I honor Jim Elmen's request to make only the index of articles available
3. The article title by definition does include key words, but I felt the index/title should also be a link to a pdf of the article
4. The entire index is designed for use within the database itself for viewing and searching, but a pdf was put up for those not wanting to install the database

I have all the issues which were used to construct the index. I scanned a number of articles into pdfs and put them into the database and uploaded them to the rnsdb volunteer web site. A volunteer task was created in the forum to scan the remainder with the hope that this valuable resource could be made free to all.
However, it was requested that RNS preferred to sell these, even though the copyrights, if any, belong to the authors. Many of the articles were by Ran Zander who from my work with him on the database project wanted them available to all for free. Therefore most of the links shown in the index are dead.
Not reading Russian, I would appreciate any feedback on how the Google translation worked

Feedback on Russian Numismatic Society Volunteer Database Project at
Forum comments are sought to determine need, and if any support exists for the project. A description of the history, objectives, database functions, and sample pdf/jpg outputs fr om the database is at There is also a forum set up
The database is in English with Brekke/Severin entries for coins and random entries for literature and medals. This is how it evolved in the 1980s for my own use. It became a volunteer project in collaboration with Ran Zander in 1992 with 20 volunteers including Brekke. It was put aside due to limitations of the technology, but redesigned and proposed again in 2012 wh ere it now stands.
Comments are appreciated and 5-7 volunteers are needed to download the programs to test. The whole system is free, open source, with no ads, and reflect an evolution of what I feel collectors would need. A lot of data already exists, but images, conversion to Bitkin numbers, forgeries, valuations, auction results, links etc all need to be added. But if you go through the project, you will see there is a place for everything to fit.
Additional input is also needed on how to contact the forum moderator to see if a sub-forum for Database technology for Russian Numismatics could or should be created. Also I need any help on translation and communicating with a Russian forum

The Archer library sold for $177,000 hammer w/o 15% commission. Not much when you consider one coin can be that much. It approached the Landry and Hermes sales, although missing 11 of the GDM Corpus, his 1883 Rare Coins in My Collection, and 1902 want list. Many of the great rarities were there including 48 of 50 Peter I plates, Schubert, Reichel missing the Poland volume, Tiregale, Oreschnikov, etc. I plan to put this and the Landry/Hermes auctions lot results into the database over the next month or so. The Brekke library has already been entered and a pdf is at the web site. By way of comparison, the Brekke library sold for $15,000 but that was in 1996 and was more a research library than a collector's library with many reprints and photocopies
